The tomte ("tomtar", plural) is a mythological creature from Nordic folklore typically associated with the winter solstice. The creature is generally described as a being no taller than 35 inches and has an appearance similar to that of a garden gnome with a tall conical hat. It is known to have immense strength and is considered the protector of the farm and livestock.
